I am starting this blog on what is called by some places as first night. In reality it is the last night of the year, not the first.

Perhaps they should call it first morning. I am guessing they are now calling the time after 12 midnight , night. In my mind it is always 1AM in the morning. It makes no sense too me.

I think this is same as when people suddenly created a year 0 making the new millennium start on 1/1/2000.

I agree with you. At 9 p.m. on December 31st you were definitely experiencing the last night of the year. But after 12 midnight you were still in the middle of the night (midnight) but you were simultaneously in the beginning of the first morning – morning being a.m. begins the night before- because our conception of all this is based on the days of the year and not whether it’s dark or light. So following midnight the military clock calls it 00:01, 00:02 etc because it is actually the beginning of the day after yesterday, the morning and in the case of January 1st, the first morning. BUT until a minute after 11:59 (23:59) on December 31st it is definitely the last night. For the killjoys that go to bed before New Years, they went to sleep on the last night but woke up on the first morning. Those who celebrated had their countdown on the last night but celebrated the first morning which actually began on the first night! So, January 1st was the first night interrupted by the first stretch of daylight! During the daylight on January 1st we refer to the festivities of Last Night and most of us can’t wait to get to sleep Tonight – the same date!
